summary of part 1: chapters 1-5
  • Winston Smith is a member of the ruling party in London
  • The party "Big Brother" is always watching him
  • The Ministry of Truth Alters historical documents to the party's liking
  • Winston writes in a diary sometimes which is against the rules
  • He is afraid of being caught by the Thought Police
  • Children are "Junior Spies"
  • Winston has lunch with Syme to find out about the party's past

Summary of the end of book one and the beginning of book two:
  • The dark haired woman passed Winston a note that said "I Love You"
  • He used to think she was a spy but was now convinced she wasn't
  • Winston finds out that her name is Julia
  • The two decided to meet up where they could not be watched
  • They make love and it was everything Winston always imagined it would be
  • Julia tells him about all the men she has been with and this excites Winston because it means more people are going against "Big Brother"
  • Winston tells Julia he wants to push his ex-wife off a cliff, but he said it wouldn't help him escape depression
  • He wishes that Katherine would die so he could marry Julia
  • It was begining to get harder from him to meet up with Julia
  • The "Hate Week" is promoted by the government and you must participate
  • They hate whatever the government tells them to hate
  • Winston begins complaining that Julia is only a rebel "from the waist down"

Summary of 6-10 of Chapter 2:
  • Julia and Winston are hiding out in the room above Mr. Charrington's antique shop
  • Winston dreams of murdering his own mother and realizes how much he hates Party for eliminating human feelings
  • W & J worry that if they are caught, they will be brutally tortured or even killed
  • They travel to O'Briens together where O'Brien turns off the telescreen, as if they are safe from being osbserved
  • Winston tells him how they hate the Party and wish to be part of the Brotherhood
  • The speaker at Hate-Week tells everyone how Oceania was, and always will be, at war with Eurasia
  • Everyone is embarrassed for carrying the anti-Eurasia signs and blame Emmanuel Goldsteins agents for sabotaging them
  • Winston reads through The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism in Charrington's room
  • WAR IS PEACE
  • The next morning, W & J realize a telescreen is hidden and they are being watched
  • Troops bust through the window and kick W and beat Julia
  • Mr. Charrington is part of the Thought Police
